Letter, June 1835, to Rev. John F. Brooks introducing Edward Chapman who wishes to enter his brother in Brooks' school. Typescripts of resolutions from an anti-abolition meeting, a letter to Lovejoy regarding the resolutions and a July 26, 1837 letter to Mr. B.K. Hart and others declining their offer because he believes that the press must be free of all outside influence. Typescript of letter, Aug. 1837, calling for a convention to form a State Anti-Slavery Society. Sept. 8, 1837 letter to Mr. Wright asking for help getting signatures on a petition, to be published in the Observer. Typed copy of the petition. Sept. 11, 1837 statement of Observer affairs. Letter, Oct. 30, 1837 re: payment for the printing press.

Alton, Ill. newspaper editor and abolitionist, he was also an ordained Presbyterian minister and had edited the St. Louis Observer. He left St. Louis after several printing presses had been destroyed by pro-slavery mobs and came to Alton. There too, the pro-slavery faction destroyed his presses.
